Having blog is a hard job. It asks for your attention and regular maintenance. Whether it’s writing, photographing or designing – you always have to do something to keep up with the flow. Therefore I’m here to share some tips how to create a long-lasting blog design!
When I first started blogging, the redesign of my blog was part of my daily life. Literally every day I made new decisions about how it should look like, what should be in there, how all the graphics should be designed etc. I was as lost as one person could be. I not only spent time polishing all the details but I also didn’t hesitate when it came to a complete rebranding. It was a mess!
The question is: how to find your way around this problem?
And the answer is pretty simple: create a blog design that will be a great choice for the long run.
Why we constantly seek changes
One of the very basics about why people are constantly seeking changes is the willingness to find something that will be better, more beautiful, more creative, more you. In many sceneries when it comes to personal branding this becomes a full circle of neverending rebranding. You start with an idea – ”yes! This is totally me, I should go for it!”, you make it happen, you get bored, you find a new idea…
Or instead of getting bored you start doubting your choices. Was it the best option for you and your business? Is it really you? There should be something that’s even more you than this…
For any business branding, it works just like for our lives in general – you always want more, different, better. And the grass is always greener on the other side…
How to find the best for your blog design
First of all, we all have to understand that there’s no one right formula for everything. What’s working for one might not be working for you. So that makes the whole find the best thing even harder… And my advice for this one is rather simple:
Just trust your gut.
The circle will never end if you won’t learn to trust in yourself. There are some simple steps to design your blog in the best way possible. Follow these before making any crucial design decisions and after that – just stop! Scheme to follow:
- Do the research. Check your favorite blogs, check your least favorite blogs, find inspiration on Pinterest, Tumblr or Behance. Ask people to share their favorite blog designs. Reach out to your friends and readers. Ask questions about what way you should go.
- Gather all the information. Create a list/mood-board with good and bad ideas. Try to visualize everything you just learned. Put your own ideas in front of you.
- Make conclusions. This is where you can check out website templates or start working with a designer. Create your own vision of what you really want out of all that. Keep in mind that not everything will work for your purpose.
- Discuss and consult. Get back to your friends and readers, find some feedback for your ideas. Maybe they’ll have some amazing suggestions you never thought about!
- Make it happen. Whenever the decision is done – make it happen. Make it happen as good as you can (or make your designer do it as close as you imagined).
- Leave it for rest. Get back. Make sure everything is great. And be done.
When you’ve come to that one design through all this path it means something and you should trust it. Just because you get bored or changed your mind it doesn’t mean that design is not working anymore if it was chosen as a good one at first.
Fool-proof blog design choices
As long as it’s great to tailor everything to your needs, likes and preferences, there still are some blog design tips for your blog that can work as fool-proof choices. If you want to make sure that you won’t need to change your blog design within a year just because people won’t get it anymore follow these tips and you won’t need to bother anymore!
HACK #1: Simplicity
The modern word for it these days would be Minimalism. But I prefer to stick with simplicity. It’s always a good way to go and, believe me, it’s something people won’t get bored off so easily. If it’s simple – it’s simple. Just like that. If it’s easy to find and use your navigation, if your blog layout is simple, if your banners are not overwhelming – it’s nice to be around. Complicated design can be beautiful but not everyone will get it. Meanwhile, simplicity goes a long way and most people are used to the very basic idea of it.
HACK #2: Clean fonts
Fonts are fun. There are tons of fonts to try out. Script or old-school, simple or with patterns, curly or straight. Oh, boy, even graffiti and horror. But, as it happens, fonts are just as much of a seasonal thing as fashion in general. The safe way to go? Choose simple fonts that will work all the same for a variety of platforms, smaller or bigger screens.
For example, Geo Sans Light, Timeless or Roboto would be good – but still unique – options to go. Make sure to choose a font that has more than one style – it’s not only regular but also bold, italic etc. The more styles it has the easier it will be for you to adjust it to your further branding and use not only on your website but elsewhere as well.
HACK #3: Few colors & simple color palette
There was a day when I woke up and decided: yellow, pink and green will be my colors. Bold, outstanding, crazy. All my images got branded accordingly and here comes the truth: bold, outstanding and crazy will make you tired fast and easily.
It’s insanity to work with crazy patterns, bright colors, and other specific design elements on a daily basis. Even crazier – to keep up with liking it. It doesn’t mean that you can’t use bright and bold colors. You can and you should!
But at the same time be aware of how much of those you use. One bright and outstanding branding element is a great option! Two: think about it twice. Anything more than that turns into circus pretty easily with some time. Choose the color palette that you can use in various ways: both for some elements to ”pop” once in a while and on a daily basis without burning your eyes out.
HACK #5: Minimalistic image branding
If you’re writing a blog or providing a visual material with any other kind of web content make sure to brand your images and do it as minimalistic as you can. There are several reasons for that.
Minimalistic branding is not really running after any kind of tendencies. Just as it is with simplicity itself: if you make it simple and easy to understand for various genders, ages, and cultures, you won’t have to bother about changing it all the time. And minimalism is what people really do get these days! Besides that, you won’t have to spend tons of time for each image creation process if you stick with the minimalism.
If your blog or website has a sidebar, be smart and use it. Design sidebar according to your needs but don’t overwhelm it. Make sure your readers don’t get distracted with crazy ads, many offers or way too much text. Most important things to use on your sidebar are many shortcuts: option to get to know more about you, most recent or most popular posts they can check out right away, your contact information or anything relevant to your needs and target audience.
The footer is part of the website that many people tend to forget about but it’s another useful blog design element you can use! It’s important to use it even if you don’t think you actually need it. Have you ever been in a situation where you’ve scrolled till the end of the page, you want to get in touch or get to know more but there are no options to do that without scrolling way back? That’s right.
The footer is the answer! It’s a simple way to gather all the most important information without overwhelming your website design itself. Start with whatever is the most important part for you: your e-mail or any other contact information, for example. Also, adding another menu is a good choice to make!
