I consider online courses as one of the most effective ways to earn passive income and build a business out of any of your existing skills and experiences.
As Teachable’s creator has revealed, there really are MANY different topics people like to cover in their courses and most of them have the potential to become widely popular.
In short, there really is no reason NOT to consider online course creation for your own business.
However, coming up with a clear plan and creating an irresistible course is a huge challenge. If you’ve decided to take this step and make it happen, make sure to look into these online course trends.
Whether you see these online course trends as great and decide to follow is up to you.
The perfect way to build your course depends on your topic, your audience and your own goals NOT the trends! But they definitely can work as a great inspiration.
What online course trends to look out for in 2020?
COURSE CREATION TREND #1: Very niche-specific topics
First of all, small and niche-specific topics are big in online course trends.
While several years back, a course on “Social media management” could be very well sold, these days we can see a lot of more specific topics. For example, “Pinterest marketing for Etsy sellers”.
Some people like it because they’re learning to embrace a new knowledge of one skill at a time. Others are very clear on what they need to know so they seek it right away. Also, these days we just have so much excessive information everywhere that it’s precious to know what to focus on.
For creators, this one of online course trends helps to create clear curriculum that will be dedicated to a specific group of people, always keeping in mind their specific needs and problems.
Besides that, it’s a lot easier to actually find and target the right audience when you can pinpoint exact problems to solve.
Niche-specific topic requests very in-depth information, actionable guides and WORKING strategies. Which leads us to the next point.
COURSE CREATION TREND #2: Actionable courses
While long and descriptive information can be interesting for some, course creation is following the trend that people are lacking the time and we need fast and actionable information to work with.
Therefore, shorter but more on-point courses are very important! This can also include Worksheets or to-do lists to follow.
What people want from online courses are results. And to get results, they want exact steps to take.
The courses that make the most sales offer CLEAR results.
Yes, any supportive information and guidance always is a good idea. But the base of the course should always be focused on reaching the goals specific course sets!
COURSE CREATION TREND #3: Video lectures
Although it’s optional whether or not to have a video as part of the course lectures, videos have many benefits!
It’s not a secret that many digital marketing efforts are based on videos. In recent years, platforms like Facebook and Instagram have focused their efforts on evolving video strategies.
Facebook Live, Instagram Stories, Youtube. All of these platforms and features have proven that people do love videos.
The first step to adding videos to your course is NOT TO BE AFRAID.
We all fear to be in front of a camera, just some of us manage to hide it better or just work through this fear.
Quite literally around 90% of course creators who you see in videos have been fearing their appearance, have thought their videos suck, their voices are the worst or overall it’s definitely not the best idea ever…
But once you get over yourself, you can find out what’s on the other side of effective video lectures (bigger engagement, more students, higher price point AND MORE!)
Besides that, it doesn’t always have to be HD, pro-level video recording with the best sound system and high-class montage. Remember that the information you give is the most important part.
If you decide to use this one of course creation trends for your online course as well, here are some ideas:
- Create an introduction video, talking about yourself, your experience and why you created this course. If you don’t have the option or interest to create more than this one video, it can be just enough to make your course more personal;
- Make presentation videos with a small screenshot of yourself. This is my personal favorite which makes the perfect balance of being in front of the camera and keeping my distance. I find this to be an effective method for those who don’t feel particularly excited about being in front of the camera;
But besides seeing this just as a course trend, we also should understand that people are different and each one of us has our own learning preferences. While some might prefer reading, others will love watching a video instead. Giving options to work with is the best choice!
COURSE CREATION TREND #4: Flexible pricing plans
This trend is especially important if your course is on the higher end of the price list.
A flexible pricing plan is an amazing way to attract more students and embrace them to make the purchase. Let’s be honest – not all of us have hundreds waiting to be spared for a course we’d like to buy.
An example of a flexible course pricing plan is the option to buy with one payment that gives a discount or choose a payment plan that separates the price in several parts.
There are many studies that prove how different payment plans really attract different audiences. Therefore – leading more students to your course!
COURSE CREATION TREND #5: Choosing an easy to use platform
The last but not least is the trend to choose an easy-to-use course creation platform.
Several years ago course creators always were eager to create their own websites and databases. But these days online course creation platforms have improved so much that even the biggest course creators choose to use them.
These platforms not only make the life of a course creator easier but also makes it easier for a student to participate in several courses with ease – keeping them all on one, easy to use platform.
Here are some to consider:
- Teachable. Free to get started with (up to 10 students), easy to use, multi-functional, great design, amazing support.
- Thinkific. Free to get started with (3 courses, unlimited students), easy to use, versatile design options, a popular choice.
- Kartra. All-in-one digital marketing platform offering not only online course hosting but also email sequences, webinar hosting and way beyond!
