The myths about Photoshop

Most of the reasons why bloggers are hesitant to get started on Photoshop are myths. For example…

MYTH #1: Photoshop is hard to learn

No. Just like any other tool, it will take you an hour or two to learn how to get around. It will also take a bit more time to get used to things like easier command combos or just to remember placement of the necessary tools BUT it’s no harder to learn than any other new tool you might pick up.

My very first experience with Photoshop was 6 years ago. I didn’t even know how to start a new document! It took me 2-3 Youtube tutorials and I learned all the basics.

Yes, it will take time to MASTER it. And it will also take time to learn how to use Photoshop effectively. However, as a tool, it’s not as hard to learn as people talk on the streets…

MYTH #2: It’s expensive

Photoshop costs starting from $9.99/monthly.

Yes, there was a time in my life when I thought spending even a cent for my business was a hard challenge to handle. But, let’s be honest. If you’re investing in ANY other online service or tool – may it be Dropbox, Canva, website hosting, Tailwind, ConvertKit or anything else – this price is just the same and often even cheaper than other platforms.

MYTH #3: Only designers need it

While Photoshop is widely used by designers, any online business owner, blogger and creative can benefit from using Photoshop.

Photoshop gives you an option to create ANY kind of a high-quality graphic. As long as you learn your way around it, you can master plenty of different styles and your business would benefit big time.

The benefits of using Photoshop for bloggers

There literally are PLENTY of benefits of using Photoshop. Here are just some of them:

  • You’ll have unlimited design options. Any style, color, shape, pattern, combination. Any design your mind comes up with, you can create it on Photoshop. Besides, there are crazy many free Photoshop templates to use and then adjust to your branding and business. So you don’t even have to do it yourself!
  • Photoshop can save you LOADS of money. Imagine outsourcing Pinterest graphic design. Let’s say you need 10 new graphics per month and each will cost $5. This sums up to $50 for one blog promotion platform only! Now, you’d have a chance to design your own e-books, Instagram photos, e-mails, sidebar banners, social media promo’s and well beyond!
  • Besides creating graphics, you can also edit any of your photos. You won’t need any other software to improve your headshots, edit photos for your Instagram feed or family album.
  • It has an integrated stock library! Yes, this means that you can find stock images and videos for your business. It’s all included in the subscription
  • PS Subscription includes a 20GB cloud space! Although it might not be enough forever, it’s a great way to make sure all your hard work is properly saved.

How to learn Photoshop?

Obviously, learning to effectively use Photoshop for your blog will take some time and dedication. However, believe me when I say – it will pay off!

Here are some ways how to learn Photoshop with ease:

Youtube videos

When I got started, Youtube videos was my first go-to.

Although I’m personally not a tutorial fan and find it rather hard to actively follow long tutorial videos, this was the best way to learn Photoshop.

First of all, there are gazillion Photoshop tutorial videos online. For each specific tool, as well as whole guides on how to create something from nothing. You’ll find both 3 and 20 minute tutorials. Just take your pick!

I’d suggest starting with some basic videos showing you overall features and then try to challenge yourself with some more challenging tasks.

You might not always be interested in the result but the skills you’ll learn along will widen your Photoshop horizons!

I believe that 80% of the Photoshop skills I have now (6 years in), I learned in the first week of learning Photoshop… Yes, I have mastered them and explored new ways of using those skills but it took me just a few videos to learn all the must-know how-tos.

Online courses

Udemy, Skillshare and plenty of other websites offer Photoshop courses for starters.

Skillshare gives you two months of free premium account with access to ALL of their courses! No payments, no commitments.

Here are some of the Skillshare’s Photoshop courses for beginners to consider:

Books

Yes, good old books.

Even though for most it will feel like a hardship to learn Photoshop from a book, some might actually prefer it!

Learning from a book might be more straightforward if you have plenty of time. You don’t need to catch up with a video tutorial, you can just go through the book in your own terms.

PRO Tip: Use templates!

Here’s a trick I wish somebody told me when I just started learning Photoshop. FREE TEMPLATES.

Just Google it and you will see a world full of wonders.

There are free Photoshop templates for almost a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g.

And those templates is an amazing way to learn Photoshop. Once you know the basics, download such templates and see how different tools are used to create a variety of graphics.

One of the best places to find free Photoshop templates is Freepik. By the search tab, you can choose the type of file you’re searching for. Pick PSD and you’ll find Photoshop templates.

What kind of templates am I talking about?!

Brochures, flyers, social media banners, Facebook ads, IG Stories and well beyond! Anything a blogger might need!

Practice. Practice. PRACTICE.

Photoshop is fun! However, you need to let go of expectations and let yourself wander. Try and practice. Fail and create horrible designs. That’s the only way to learn.

Whenever you encounter a problem, find the solution on Youtube or Google. Believe me, they are there!

What kind of blog graphics to create with Photoshop?

  • Blog headers
  • In-post promo’s
  • Social media avatars
  • Social media banners
  • Instagram stories
  • Instagram posts
  • Pinterest graphics
  • Sidebar ads
  • E-books
  • Worksheets
  • Product mockups
  • Templates for others to use
  • Checklists

As you see, Photoshop is a unique tool for bloggers to create stunning graphics! And this list is just an example. Whatever kind of graphic you need, you can create it!

Is Photoshop better than Canva? The big Photoshop vs Canva battle

Before we dive deep into comparing Photoshop vs Canva, it’s important to understand that both tools can be great if you master them.

Photoshop is a professional tool initially built for designers while Canva is an easy-to-use online platform for those who need quick and free graphics.

As a designer myself, I have always found Canva quite limiting. Sometimes moving elements messes up the whole design and takes twice as much time as doing the same on Photoshop would.

On Canva, you can have prepared templates to get started with. However, we already learned that Photoshop also has plenty of free templates to download and use (you just have to put in a bit more time researching them).

Is Photoshop more expensive than Canva?

No! Canva can be used for free, however, if you want to use all of the options, you’ll need to pay $12.99/monthly while Photoshop costs only $9.99/monthly and gives you way more customization options along with that!

With Canva you can work from anywhere as long as you’re logged into your account. It’s a big pro! However, Photoshop gives you 20GB of cloud space so you can easily save your files and work on them elsewhere just as well.
